Why individual coaching?
According to research in organisational and occupational psychology, leaders who take part in individual coaching programmes and who have an external consultant are substantially more successful, more balanced and more self-aware than those who do not set aside time and money for this.
This is because:
- a leader can easily become lonely, since at work they are mostly surrounded by people who depend on them for their livelihood
- they receive little honest feedback from the people closest to them, so they often realise too late what they should change, and what they should do, or should have done, differently
- many unresolved problems and dilemmas can build up that it would not be sensible to share with colleagues, which can deepen their mental isolation further and make wrong decisions more frequent
Without bias
Beyond this, those directly involved are often unable to see individual and organisational problems clearly, because they are themselves part of them. Strong emotional involvement and vested interests can considerably distort the way a situation, a problem or an opportunity is judged.
The added value of an external consultant is that they see situations from the outside, as a professional, without the bias that comes from being involved.
